Terredora Falanghina named Dallas Morning News “Wine of the Week”

falanghinaDallas Morning News Wine of the Week: Terredora di Paolo

April 29, 2009

Terredora di Paolo, Irpinia IGT, Falanghina 2007, $16.99-$18.99

When you get tired of the “same old, same old,” Italy is the place to go for wines with distinctive personalities. OK, so maybe it’s not so easy to pronounce the names of the wines, but it’s sure easy to drink ones like this made from the falanghina grape by the winery owned by Walter Mastroberardino and his children Lucio, Daniela and Paolo. They may be the largest vineyard owners and winery in the area, but they handle their wines with the attention and care of artisans.

This one is made to emphasize the delectable peach, pineapple, pear and apple fruit buoyed by tangy acidity. Serve it with a creamy pasta. Available at Centennial Fine Wine and Spirits, Farpointe Cellar, Jimmy’s Food Store and Monticello Liquor.

Our good friend Paolo Cantele of the Cantele winery (Puglia, Italy) presided over a sold-out dinner last night at the legendary Jimmy’s Food Store in Dallas last night. Paolo poured and talked about six of his families wines: its crisp, bright, fresh Chardonnay; “east coast” Fiano, grown in Salento as opposed to Campania where it is more commonly found; a stunning Rosato made from 100% Negroamaro grapes; a food-friendly Primitivo, with balanced alcohol and gorgeous natural fruit flavors; a classic Salice Salentino, one of the most elegant expressions of Negroamaro we’ve ever tasted; and the winery’s sexy Amativo, a blend of Negroamaro and Primitivo, aged judiciously in barrique.

Paolo was joined by Dallas fashion icon and taste-maker Gianni Madrini (seated to Paolo’s left, above), style editor and executive producer of Global Fashion News.

Paul’s wine selection is considered one of the best Italian collections in Texas and his Italian foods section and fresh produce rival New York’s best.
